Comprehension passage
The bat is a creature much detested by most people in the Western Nigeria, it generally belief to be blind, little creatures, and it said to be usually spread Rabins because of assumption such as these, bat have been hunted down and large of them were wipes out, some species of them are already extinct.
Are these assumptions really correct? Certainly not, scientific research have proved clearly that bets are not blind and that majority of them in fact have good eye sight. They do not spread rabies and only three of the one thousand or species spread suck blood
Bats are vary in size ranging from the smallest, which is the tumble bee bats of Thailand weighing less than a coin, to the giant flying foxes of java with a windspan of about six feet
For from being a rightful monster the bat is valuable most bats eats insects and pests one of insect –eating bat can capture up to 600 mosquitoes in one hour. This is for more than you can kill by spraying with insepcitized in the night. And of course, your insecticide is harmful to the environment. Besides, some bats are vital to the spread and survival of our forest unfortunately, bats are facing a very hard time, their greatest foe is man.
Loss of habitant species and indiscriminate killing of large numbers are reducing their population from millions to thousands. Some species are now in extinct. Out of prejudice and ignorance, man has destroyed millions, even in area where bats are highly beneficial. They have been indiscriminately killed. Man should learn not to upset the ecological balance around him by stupidly wiping out this useful mammal.
Questions.
- Mention any three assumptions which people associate with bats
- Give three reasons to show that each assumption is not true [c] in what two ways are bats useful? [d]Because of assumption such as these _________(i) what grammatical name is given to this expression? (ii) What does it function in the sentence? (e) what figurative expression is a frightful monster (f) for each of the following words, find another word or phrase which means same can replace it as it is used
