Comprehension Passage (THE DEAF WORLD)
The deaf world is a unique world on its own. It is the world of people who are ordinarily different from other social groups. The deaf is found in all societies, that is, it cuts across all races. By deaf society, we meant a set of people who lack one of the five senses of the human body. That is, the hearing organ. Therefore, to be deaf means to lose the ability of hearing through the ears- the organ responsible for hearing sounds.
The loss of hearing varies. In some cases, it could be severe and in others mild. There may be extreme hearing loss. Hearing impairment may also occur; this is when the auditory system is seriously affected, that is damaged. Also, there may be a complete loss of hearing; the state is called “stone deaf” when he is unable to hear anything at all.
The state of deafness is attributed to some factors. Most importantly is body injury especially head injury sustained in an accident. The damage of the auditory system in some instances has been traced to loud noise. Deafness also may arise from diseases before or after birth. This is called congenital deafness.
